Available Course Offerings:

CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION (CPR) & FIRST AID

The American Health & Safety Institute CPR/FIRST AID/AED for Healthcare Providers Program Trainers will cover risk factors like foreign body airway obstruction, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation for adults/children.

First Aid will cover minor medical emergencies such as cuts, burns, etc. Both trainings are required for the MHRT I certification.

Recertification required every two years.

Four-Hour Two-Year Certification

CERTIFIED RESIDENTIAL MEDICATION AIDE (CRMA)

CRMA is a 40-hour course including clinicals that will prepare participants to administer medications in residential care facilities. This program is approved through the State of Maine Residential/Licensing Regulations. Successful completion of the course is required for the MHRT I certification. A clinical test with a Registered Nurse (RN) is needed to complete this course. This is commonly referred to as a Med Pass.

Participants who currently hold a CRMA certification can attend the eight-hour State of Maine Residential/Licensing Regulations approved class. A copy of the participant’s current certificate must be brought to the class. First Aid will cover minor medical emergencies such as cuts and burns, etc. Both trainings are required for the MHRT I certification.

Refresher course required within two years of certification.

DIABETES & INHALER TRAINING

Diabetes Training

Provides certification for the following topics to include, but not limited to:

  • Dietary Guidelines
  • Diabetes & Nutrition
  • Diabetes Medicines
  • Injection Techniques (injection site selection, drawing & injecting insulin)
  • Insulin Storage & Handling
  • Mixing Insulin
  • Monitoring BSL
  • Treatment of Insulin Reaction
  • Knowing the difference between Hyper/Hypoglycemia
  • Foot Care

Nebulizer Training

Provides you with an understanding from the American Association for Respiratory Care with the correct use of your inhaler so you get the exact dose of medicine, making it easier to control your symptoms of asthma, COPD, or other respiratory diseases.

MENTAL HEALTH REHABILITATION TECHNICIAN (MHRT I)

Mental Health and Rehabilitation Technician (MHRT I) provide daily living supports to persons with severe and persistent mental illness in residential settings. The MHRT I has two levels of certification: provisional and full. To qualify to apply for MHRT I certification you must be at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma or a GED. You must have a provisional certification before you deliver MHRT I services.

Provisional Certification
MHRT I Provisional is a one-year certification in which you must complete the following courses before obtaining your MHRT I certification:

  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) & First Aid
  • Mental Health Support Specialist (MHSS)
  • The MANDT System

Full Certification
To maintain your full certification all your required courses must be current.

This completed course is one requirement to receive your MHRT Certification.

MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT SPECIALIST (MHSS)

The intention of the course is to provide an overview of health care delivery in the assisted living environment.

MHSS is a 40-hour course required by DHHS for all staff working in the field of assisted living in Mental Health facilities. There will be many topics covered such as: Understanding Mental Health and Mental Illness toward Health & Recovery, Trauma, Maine’s Mental Health System, Communication, Sexuality & more.
This completed course is one requirement to receive your MHRT I Certification.

LEVEL OF CARE UTILIZATION SYSTEM (LOCUS) FOR PSYCHIATRIC & ADDICTION SERVICES

(Class must have a minimum of six people)

This is a four-hour training in a small group setting. Participants are provided all necessary materials. Training includes completion and discussion of two practice vignettes. Participants leave the training with four reliability vignettes to be submitted to DHHS. Successful completion and submission of the reliability vignettes is sufficient to qualify participants to receive a Rate ID number. A Rater ID number is required for independent completion of the LOCUS.

THE MANDT SYSTEM

The Mandt System is a person-centered, values-based process that encourages intentional and positive interaction with others. Students are also taught physical interventions to use when it is necessary.
